It is important to us that we continue to attract highly qualified GPs to our area. We live in a beautiful part of the country and have excellent general practices and really want to attract the best candidates possible to work with us to continue to improve the services we provide to our population.
In 2015, one of our two predecessor organisations – NHS Durham Dales, Easington and Sedgefield (DDES) Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) launched a scheme to attract GPs from across the UK to work in the area. The scheme was then run in conjunction with our other predecessor organisation NHS North Durham CCG.
The GP ‘Career Start’ scheme invited applicants to apply from across the UK for salaried GP posts based in practices across our area (with a salary of £8k per session – there was also a paid Personal Development Plan (PDP) session each week). The successful applicants receive two year’s joint funding from the CCGs and Health Education North East (HENE).
The GPs receive mentorship as well as help to focus on their clinical and personal development and the opportunity to take part in a range of educational activities.
Posts have been established that work jointly with the Public Health Department in Durham County Council and our local foundation trusts. These posts have a strong development component in general practice, public health, secondary care and hospital specialties.
